For people who live in poverty, every day is a risk, and being outside in your neighborhood is a health hazard. The violence is linked deeply to the lack of economic opportunity. These conditions are unacceptable for our own families... and for any families.
In partnership with A Wider Circle, Leadership Greater Washington invites you to the 2020 Thought Leadership Series: “Ending Systemic Violence Through Economic Opportunity.” Leaders will engage in six half-day interactive workshops to educate and promote bold thinking and solutions to reducing systemic violence in our region through economic partnership, multi-sector collaboration, and opportunity.

Session 1: The History and Current Conditions
- Anchors the series by framing the issue on a national and regional level, linking the roots and history of systemic violence to economic disparity
- Educates participants on the core issues that create systemic violence in select communities
- Examines the impact of poverty, the underground economy and the role of incarceration and law enforcement
- Confirmed speakers include Dr. Mark Bergel, Founder and CEO of A Wider Circle and Jimmie Jenkins, President of ManPower DC
Session 2: Violence Prevention Programs - Across the Nation: Chicago
- Examines the epidemic of violence in Chicago, providing deeper context into violence reduction efforts in the city
- Informs participants on the role of citywide safety initiatives and the role of community groups, government and the public sector
- Confirmed speakers include Chris Patterson, Director of Programs, Institute for NonViolence Chicago
Session 3: Violence Prevention Programs Across the Nation: ROCA
- Through an exploration of the issues impacting Baltimore, we examine trends in disrupting the cycle of incarceration and poverty through gang intervention, and initiatives tailored for high-risk youth and teen parents
- Participants will gain a greater understanding of how leaders can harness their collective impact to reverse systemic violence through community partnerships
- Potential speakers include Molly Baldwin, Founder, ROCA and/or Kurt Palermo, Director of Program Operations and Employment, ROCA Baltimore
Session 4: Violence Prevention Programs - In our midst: Washington D.C. region
- Specific to DC, this session will examine the local violence intervention efforts by community groups, government initiatives and public-sector partnerships
- Participants will gain insight into local opportunity-building efforts targeting systemic violence
- Confirmed speakers include individuals involved in direct interventions and will also include either Tony Lewis, Jr. or Tyrone Parker, Executive Director and Co-Founder of The Alliance of Concerned Men, a group that has worked to prevent youth violence in the DC area since 1991
Session 5: Keys to Success and Change
- Emphasize the role of the business community in providing solutions to systemic violence
- It will include an analysis of key factors such as political will, funding, consistency, sustainability and community engagement with impacted populations
- The discussion period will cover efforts to prevent and mitigate violence while building outlets, alternatives, and opportunities Session speakers are still to be determined
Session 6: Be the change - taking action
- Offer channels for action and determine a plan for how leaders can harness their collective impact to change the trajectory of systemic violence in our community
- The discussion will include individuals working on all sides of the issue, final Q&A, coalition-building and idea generation to be led by Dr. Mark Bergel
- Confirmed speakers include Mr. Jimmie Jenkins, CEO of Manpower, Inc.
Participants must commit to the entire series.
