Founded in 1991, Youth Leadership Greater Washington (YLGW) provides a six-month, interactive youth leadership development and community education program for high school sophomores and juniors in Northern Virginia, Maryland and Washington, DC. YLGW seeks to connect youth leaders while raising their awareness of critical regional issues.
Youth Leadership Greater Washington connects area youth with local leaders to raise their awareness of regional issues and challenge assumptions about their roles in the world. Each year, Leadership Greater Washington selects proven or aspiring youth leaders from diverse backgrounds and provides them with the opportunities for an in-depth learning and collaboration experience with some of the area’s most important decision-makers.
During program days, Youth Leaders concentrate on one community topic and engage with community leaders to explore challenges and opportunities together with their peers. In years past, Youth Leaders have addressed issues like diversity, art, community health and public safety, what it means to be a social advocate, leadership and more.
At the end of the YLGW program, graduates walk away with tools to help them be leaders in their communities – at school, at home, and among their peers.
YLGW applications are open to current high school sophomores and juniors at all schools across the DMV region – public, private and charter schools.
